DFW Image Consultant, Sharman Marshall-Burks of Imagin U is Wiggin’ Out!

Flippin’ your wig because you want a new look but can’t decide which one is right for you?  Scared to commit to a different hair cut, colour, or maybe you just want to change your look temporarily?  Tired of only wearing hats or scarves to keep warm? Maybe a wig is the answer.

Go to a wig salon and try on different styles.  It is so much fun! Check out the different colours, cuts, and select from the variety of hair fibers that are best suited for you.  New hair can give you a fresh attitude and a different image at the same time.  It’s like shopping in a candy store – too much to choose from and too little time!  Before you hop in the car, put the pedal to the metal, and take a ride to Wig Wonderland…read this:

While the average size wig tends to fit about 95% of customers, quite a few wigs also come in petite and large sizes. Many have adjustable straps that give up to 1/2″ so that you can achieve a comfortable and secure fit.

To Determine the Right Size:

  • measure the circumference of your head from the front hairline to behind your ear, to the nape of your neck, to your other ear and then back to the front hairline.
  • Jot down your measurements.
  • Take them with you.

There are cornucopias of wig salons.  The perfect salon also includes stylists who will style your hair.  How convenient! You can walk out with your new look. The stylist will shape it to suit your face. If you can’t find a shop like this, then find one that has a variety of wigs and take it to your beautician for styling.

TYPES OF CAPS:

Standard or Wefted Cap
The most common form of wig has a standard or wefted cap.  A standard cap is constructed by a
machine sewing row upon row of hair wefts into the cap shape.  Not literally a cap, but the wefts form
a cap like shape.  This type of wig is the most affordable.  A variation of the standard cap is the Capless   Wig.  Instead of a lace top, the wefted hair fiber is continued over the top of the crown.  This allows maximum ventilation, more lightweight and cooler to wear.

Monofilament wigs
Refers to the nylon or polyester micro mesh into which individual strands are hand tied.  These wigs
give the illusion of skin by revealing the wearers scalp colour through the mesh, plus the hair can be parted or brushed in any direction.  These wigs are softer and recommended for sensitive scalps. They are the most expensive.

Lace Wigs
Full lace wigs are built on a fine base, usually French lace. Constructed like the monofilament
wig with its hand tied hairs.  These are custom made wigs designed to your exact specifications.
After you pick your hair colour (you can also inject highlights), the hair studio stylist will take your    measurements, and submit your order to the manufacturer.  It takes at least seven days to
construct because they tint and hand tie the hair. They will call you when the wig is ready.
The hair will be fitted and styled as if you were at the beauty shop. These wigs are usually
taped or glued on. The stylist will show you the benefits of both and how to apply. I use a
studio in the area that has years of experience and have designed wigs for many celebrities. Call me!

Lace front wigs
Lace front wigs have the lace material in the front, off the natural hairline with the rest of the
wig constructed like a regular wefted cap.
