Dallas Image Coach, Julie Thurburn with Colour IQ, talks about the advantages of creating a capsule wardrobe.
Whenever there is a change of seasons it is a good time to clean out your closet as well as review what’s been going on in there. It’s easy to collect clothes but a closet that is ready to help you get ready requires more than just great hangers. Organization begins before you go shopping and shows up every morning when it only takes 15 minutes to get dressed.
The advantage of creating a Capsule Wardrobe (coined by Susie Faux in the 70’s and popularized by Donna Karan in the 80’s) is that you can easily intermix 12-15 items rather than having to maintain the same number of individual or ‘stand alone’ pieces – especially if you travel or are on a tight budget. Plus, creating new outfits every day is so exhausting by Friday that by Saturday we’re all just lucky to see you clothed. If this is how you feel by the end of the week, take heart, there is an easier way.
Capsule Wardrobe Guidelines:
- Start with the essentials.
- Stick with colours such as navy, grey, or black for your pants or skirts.
- Solids are easier than patterns or plaids.
- Simplify your jewelry collection.
Add colourful blouses or jackets that work with the basic pant colours. Accessories can add a third colour or texture to the mix and still keep it elegant. Want to break up the solids a bit? A couple of seasonal trend pieces can easily be added to the basic wardrobe to keep it fun. The advantages to this wardrobe strategy will outweigh any external pressure you may experience from others who needs a daily dose of trend to keep them inspired. Let confidence be the magnet that attracts great personal relationships and business opportunities.
